Advancement of complementary therapies in reproductive medicine
Block M., Tinneberg H.-R.

Background : Complementary therapies are in line with the trend. To
examine whether this development also affects the field of
reproductive medicine, the development among patients with fertility
disorders was analysed in the context of this review. In the center
of this analysis were the evaluation of the data and the determinants
of the utilisation of complemetnary therapies, the preference of
specific therapies, their estimation as well as the illustration of
studies for proof of efficiency.
Results ; The analysis of scientific literature showed, that
complementary therapies rate very high in reproductive medicine. The
utilisation of complementary therapies is very popular among patients
with fertility disorder. The already utilised complementary
procedures were rated very positive. A preference for acupuncture and
homeopathy was documented. A range of studies concerning the proof of
efficiency show particularly promising effects in view of rising
fertility. Furthermore determinants were detected, which characterize
the typical user of complementary therapies : women as well as
persons with a positive health behaviour and higher educational level
prevailed.
Conclusion : In view of the positive development of complementary
therapies in reproductive medicine, the treating physician should be
informed about the advantages and disadvantages of complementary
therapies, in order to have the ability to counsel couples properly
and have the ability to meet the needs of those couples on the
concept of treatment.
